Program Areas

Community Initiatives

These community projects look to leverage and create shared resources to solve community problems. These projects arise out of conversations and connections in our communities. They represent new ways to use the commons to address issues arising from the social, political, and environmental realities of the “default” world.

Community Spaces

These physical spaces serve as educational and research sites where people can learn about the commons, as well as places where we experiment with space as a community resource. They are immersive experiences where we share our learnings on governance of shared spaces. Our community spaces also go beyond buildings to include our surroundings, ecosystems, and natural resources as part of the commons.

Community Connection

These activities connect people around the world to knowledge, capital, structure, and each other in hopes of fostering community-empowering approaches beyond our own endeavors. Projects that fall under this program area include digital communities, like our slack, where we support communities and individuals participating in commons-based experiments, our lecture series where we share learnings from our research on commons-based approaches, and our fiscal sponsorships and Revolving Loan Fund where nominated projects can find new ways to leverage community finances.
